FAQ

How does morning after pill work? - 3D animation

May I wait 72 hours to take ESCAPELLE emergency contraception pill?

Not at all! The sooner the better go to pharmacy: the earlier you take ESCAPELLE, the higher the chance to prevent pregnancy. Some people call emergency contraceptive pills “morning after pills”. Well, you don’t have to wait until the morning after. You can take ESCAPELLE pill right away or use it up to three days after unprotected sexual intercourse or if you think your birth control method failed.

How sure it is that I avoid pregnancy?

If you take ESCAPELLE it is 99% sure that you avoid pregnancy*. The sooner you take it the better.

How to take ESCAPELLE emergency contraception pill?

ESCAPELLE is a single pill solution: only 1 pill, and you can easily avoid abortion. You have to take the ESCAPELLE pill within 72 hours of having unprotected sex. There is 1 pill in the pack, and it has to be taken orally by women.

How often can I take ESCAPELLE?

Generally speaking you should not take it more than once within one menstrual cycle. If ESCAPELLE is used more than once in a menstrual cycle, it is more likely to upset your menstrual cycle (period). ESCAPELLE does not work as well as regular methods of contraception. Your doctor, practice nurse or family planning clinic can tell you about long-term methods of contraception which are more effective in preventing you from getting pregnant

Why should I use ESCAPELLE only in case of emergency?

It’s not a regular method of contraception. Try to use it rarely, in emergency only. But never forget: it has much less side effects and health risks than abortion pills or hospital abortion. You have to know that ESCAPELLE may disrupt the regularity of your period that month. Your period may come earlier than usual or later. Repeated use would be more likely to disrupt the pattern of your menstrual cycle. As your period is your main way of knowing whether you are pregnant or not, you increase your level of uncertainty if you use ESCAPELLE regularly. So, emergency contraceptive pills are not meant to be used as a regular method of contraception. If you’re sexually active, whether you have sex occasionally or frequently, you need to choose a regular long-term method of contraception that suits you.

If you are pregnant

ESCAPELLE does not work if you are already pregnant and will not harm an established pregnancy or the baby. If you think that you are pregnant, see your doctor or family planning clinic as soon as possible. If you have already taken ESCAPELLE once since your last period and you now find you are pregnant, do not take ESCAPELLE again.

What to do if I vomit after taking the pill?

After taking the emergency contraceptive pill, a few women (approximately 1 out of 100) will be sick (vomit). If you vomit within 3 hours of taking ESCAPELLE, you need to take another ESCAPELLE pill. So, go back to your pharmacist, doctor or family planning clinic for another packet. If you are sick more than 3 hours after you originally took the tablet, you do not need to take ESCAPELLE again.

How do I know it has worked?

You will know an emergency contraception pill has worked when you have your next period and it seems like a normal period.

When you have to turn to your doctor?

  • If your period is more than 5 days late, or unusually heavy or light.
  • If you are still worried that you are pregnant.
  • If you have sudden or unusual pain in the lower abdomen and your period is late.
  • If you have any concerns about your health or about the methods of contraception that is most suitable for you.

Will I feel any side effects?

ESCAPELLE is safe and effective. ESCAPELLE is the most tried morning after pill, as ESCAPELLE and POSTINOR (other brand name) were used in more than 400 million cases** without serious adverse event in the last 35 years. Most women do not experience any side effects. Some women do have side effects after taking emergency contraceptive pills such as nausea, headache, breast tenderness, stomach pain, diarrhoea, feeling dizzy or feeling tired. These symptoms are usually mild and will disappear in a short time. Some women may have changes in their period, a heavier or lighter next period, or a period that is early or late. If your period is more than 5 days late, you may be pregnant. Thought ESCAPELLE does not increase the chance that a pregnancy will be ectopic, if you have severe abdominal pain, you may have an ectopic pregnancy, and should get immediate medical attention.

What to do if you have problems after taking the pill?

If you do have a headache or feel sick, it will usually pass after a short while. So, first you should take it easy and rest. It may help if you take something to eat and drink when you take the tablet. If the symptoms persist, and it worries you, contact your doctor or pharmacist where you were given ESCAPELLE.

Does the pill change my period?

Usually taking an ESCAPELLE pill does not affect your period, and you will have it at the usual time. But your period can also come earlier or later than usual. You might also have some irregular bleeding or spotting until your next period. It is inconvenient for you, but does not mean that anything wrong is going on. These symptoms are just the effect of the hormone in the pill on your body.

If your period is late more than 5 days

Very rarely the period is more than 5 days late after taking the emergency contraceptive pill. See your doctor or clinic for a pregnancy test.
